A novel osteoporosis drug successfully reduced structural progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA) and may represent the first disease-modifying drug for this condition, a researcher said here.

In a 3-year study, patients with mild-to-moderate knee OA who were randomized to either 1 g or 2 g per day of strontium ranelate had significantly less joint space narrowing, showing decreases in joint space width of −0.23 mm and −0.27 mm, respectively, compared with a loss of −0.37 mm with placebo, according to Jean-Yves Reginster, MD, of the University of Liège in Belgium, and colleagues.
