A hot topic today among the health-conscious, fruit and vegetable smoothies and juices now have their own ardent supporters who vie for the goodness of one over the other. Juicing and blending is a great way to increase your intake of anti-oxidants. To juice or blend should actually be determined by your desired result, as there are benefits specific to each process.
Juicing
Juicing is the act of extracting the pulp of vegetables or fruits, leaving the juice in a liquid state, making it easy for consumption. Proponents of juicing cite absorbing nutrients more effectively as a benefit because your body is not expending energy digesting fiber. Other claims are that juicing helps with removal of toxins from your body and with losing weight, if done in a specific manner. The purity and high nutritional content of the juice that is extracted is especially beneficial for people who are recovering from an illness, or those who are unable to eat solid food.
Blending
Blending refers to simply combining all the ingredients in a blender, leaving the pulp and fiber intact. Fiber is a healthy addition to your diet and can reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes. Another benefit of blending over juicing, is that there is a slower rate of sugar absorption. Making frozen drinks is easy with a blender as you can simply add frozen vegetables or ice to your smoothie. The ease of cleaning up is also a factor when compared to juicing as you do not have the many parts of the juicer to clean.
Juicing / Blending Tips
• If you’re following a liquefied diet because of a medical problem, consult your physician or a registered dietitian about what foods you can and can’t have.
• Make sure that everything you juice or blend is free from contamination.
• Blend only what you can consume at one meal. If you make more, refrigerate what you don’t consume in clean covered containers. Use within 24 hours or discard.
• Fill the juicer or blender only one-third to one-half full and process on low speed to prevent overflow.
Choosing a Juicer/Blender
The ideal juicer or blender should include the pulp for consumption. It must be easy to clean, as bits of lodged food will grow bacteria. Ideally, the equipment should be dishwasher-friendly or one that can be easily scrubbed.
