Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium (the lubricating membrane surrounding the joints and tendons). This chronic disease usually causing inflammation, pain and swelling in the wrists, fingers, knees, feet, ankles and elbows. Besides the various medications prescribed to ease the pain and suffering, there are a few easy-to-do home tips that patients can follow to temporarily relieve pain.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, the following warming techniques can help relieve rheumatoid arthritis pain:

  • Take a long and very warm shower first thing in the morning to ease rheumatoid arthritis pain. Heat from the shower stream helps reduce morning stiffness.
  • Incorporate other warming elements into your daily routines, such as warming your clothes in the dryer before dressing or using an electric blanket and turning it up before getting out of bed.
  • Buy a moist heat pad from the drugstore, or make one at home by putting a wet wash cloth in a freezer bag and heating it in the microwave for one minute. Wrap the hot pack in a towel and place it over the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • To soothe stiff and painful joints in your hands, apply mineral oil to your hands, put on rubber dishwashing gloves, and place your hands in hot tap water for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Soak in a warm bath or whirlpool – immersing in the heat will cause the pain to melt away.
  • You can also add two cups of Epsom salt to warm bath water and soak in it.
  • Turmeric, the yellow spice common in Indian dishes, contains a chemical called curcumin that may be able to reduce arthritis pain. The secret is its anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Eating raw ginger on a regular basis can help alleviate pain by improving blood circulation. Simply peel and slice fresh ginger and eat it along with each meal.
  • Massaging with warm mustard oil is considered excellent for getting rid of arthritis pain and inflammation. The oil works as a natural ointment and stimulates blood flow.
